As we design loungewear for summer heat and the vacation season, we’re choosing fabrics that move easily, breathe well, and feel good on skin — especially for long days outdoors. One we’re especially excited about is Kala Cotton, an indigenous cotton variety found only in India.

How Kala Cotton Is Different from Regular Cotton

Kala Cotton is indigenous and organic, grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. It’s cultivated only in Kutch, Gujarat, where temperatures can reach 40–50°C, and is 100% rain-fed, requiring no irrigation and no chemical inputs.

Why We’re Using It for Loungewear & Travel

Kala Cotton is traditionally handwoven with a loose weave, allowing air to circulate and keeping the fabric light and breathable. Because it’s naturally grown and minimally processed, it’s gentle on skin and comfortable for all-day wear — whether you’re walking, lounging, or packing light for a holiday.

Where It Comes From

Kala Cotton grows exclusively in Kutch, Gujarat, in naturally black soil (“Kala” means black in Hindi). It has been preserved by local farming and weaving communities, passed down and practiced for generations.

A Brief History

During the British colonial period, India’s cotton industry shifted its focus to long-staple American and Egyptian cotton varieties for export. These crops required irrigation and external inputs. Many indigenous cottons disappeared, but Kala Cotton survived in remote villages through continued small-scale cultivation.

Why It Feels the Way It Does

Kala Cotton has short, sturdy fibers, which give the fabric its natural texture and soft off-white colour. It’s durable, breathable, and gets softer with every wear — made for movement, outdoor living, and easy summer days.

At TB Project, choosing Kala Cotton means creating pieces that work with your body and the climate, not against it.
