How to Care for Your Ikat Cotton Pieces

ikat cotton fabric texture warm tones breathable textile for summer clothing

We choose ikat cotton for its character, craftsmanship, and the way it feels to wear and sourced in from artisans in India. Each piece carries the subtle irregularities of handwoven fabric and the depth of traditionally dyed patterns. With the right care, you can enjoy it for a long time while preserving both the fabric and its colour

WASHING

Ikat cotton benefits from a more careful approach, especially in the first few washes:

  • Hand wash recommended, especially at the beginning
  • Use cold water (up to 30°C)
  • Choose a mild detergent
  • Wash separately or with similar dark colours
  • Turn inside out before washing

If using a machine:

  • Select a delicate cycle
  • Use cold water
  • Place garments inside out

Avoid soaking for long periods, as this may affect the dyes. Do not use bleach or harsh chemicals

DRYING

  • Air dry in the shade
  • Avoid direct sunlight to help preserve colour depth
  • Do not tumble dry

IRONING

  • Iron on medium heat
  • Turn inside out for best results
  • Slightly damp fabric is easier to press

A note from TB Project: each ikat piece reflects the hands and process behind it. Variations in pattern and colour are natural and make every garment unique

Ikat is made using a resist-dye technique, where the threads are dyed before weaving. This gives the fabric its distinctive, slightly blurred patterns. Because of this process, colours may soften gently over time — part of its natural evolution. Read more here

"Really happy I managed to catch the limited edition pink ikat kimono. The colours are fun, the tassels are such a cute touch, and it works beautifully for layering. Love supporting small businesses — you always find something unique. Absolutely love the fabric quality and feel."
